Capitol Hill

Historic church

The Church Residence is part of a significant adaptive reuse project that transformed a historic stone structure in Seattle, Washington, into a collection of bespoke residences. Our clients provided a brief that challenged conventional design norms: "think more mortuary, less sanctuary." We embraced the opportunity to create a space that feels evocative and mysterious while honoring the original character of the architecture. The result is a masterclass in gothic interior design, layering eclectic antiques and modern elements to create an unapologetically theatrical home.

  • The design centers on a high-contrast blend of the macabre and the modern. In the dining room, original stained glass windows were updated to slide open, illuminating an antique carved wood table set beneath dramatic gothic bronze chandeliers. The lofted living area balances the vertical volume of the architecture with a sculptural curved sofa, contemporary art, and moody vintage details that blur the line between a residence and a gallery.

A standout feature is the hidden whiskey bar, which we concealed behind a mirrored jib door and bookshelves. Inside, custom wood cabinetry houses individual display cases, each secured with a unique skeleton key. We carried the immersive theme into the bathrooms through specialized finishes. One suite features a hand-carved travertine vanity and a lion fountain spout against aged plaster, while the second utilizes rich black tadelakt and custom black vanity millwork with gothic arches. Throughout the home, every finish and fixture was selected to create a space that feels as though it has existed for centuries.
