East Capitol Hill
Historic Retreat
Located in the historic Capitol Hill neighborhood of Seattle, this project was a study in making a home function for a growing family without losing its original character. The objective was to execute a surgical remodel that improved the flow of the space while ensuring the furniture and decor reflected the clients’ eclectic style. We focused on creating intentional environments for their existing art collection, using a mixture of distinct color palettes to define each room. Throughout the home, we sanded and re-stained the original hardwood floors in a classic mid-toned brown to provide a cohesive foundation for the modern and traditional elements that follow.

Stepping into a project where construction was already underway required swift, strategic planning. We modified a large open addition to include a cozy, narrow den, complete with custom bookshelves and glass pocket doors. By carefully navigating the existing HVAC systems and cabinetry, we were able to carve out this intimate retreat, which we painted in a deep navy to provide a striking contrast to the bright, adjacent family room. In the kitchen, we preserved the high-quality existing structure but updated the aesthetic with painted cabinetry, new marble countertops, and refined hardware.
The home’s wallpaper and textile selections tell a deeply personal story. The entry welcomes guests with a modern take on a traditional floral pattern, while the adjacent powder room features a playful snake-motif wallpaper, a nod to a beloved former pet. In the dining room, we leaned into darker tones and classic florals for a more formal atmosphere. Upstairs, the design leans toward mid-century influences, where we collaborated with a local wallpaper company to produce custom-matched drapery fabric. This blend of periods and personal narratives results in a home that feels both storied and perfectly suited for modern family life.
